Taking inspiration from Inside no.9, I will be creating a dramatic anthology series entitled, Dreamscape. I will use media language to establish location and status. Lighting and colour will determine the character’s mind set. There will be two mind sets, the character’s dreamscape will be determined by pure, bright lighting. Reality will be shown in darker lighting and monotone colour schemes. The main character’s costume will be the focus of status change. When in dreamscape state, he will see himself dressed in smart clothes, presenting himself as neat and clean. In reality he will be wearing tatty, ripped and dark coloured clothing. This costume change will act as a juxtaposition between the two lives. Camerawork for this production is complex, using different angles and movements to reinforce status. Close up shots will delude audiences, as it will reveal the characters face, without revealing the location. Camerawork draws the audience’s eye directly to the character, through shots such as frame within a frame, creating a sense of voyeurism.
Sophisticated themes, and a young, female director will be my focal advertising point. My magazine, with the masthead: Update, is a lifestyle magazine aimed at keeping students and young adults up to date with new products and hot topic issues. Update’s front cover will feature an artistic image of the main character in Dreamscape, the image will reflect his internal struggle and split emotions, and raise unanswered questions to readers, to intrigue audiences. In the double page spread, images will be used from episode 1, ‘home alone’ to create hype and buzz around its complex narrative and interesting camerawork, furthermore, feature interviews will be included to express the productions unique selling point of an independent entrepreneurial team.
I will avoid stereotypical codes and conventions of gender representations. This will contradict Van Zoonen’s theory as images of stereotypical women behavior will be portrayed with a male character, which will go against dominant social values, and break the idea of a patriarchal society. The main character is portrayed as maternal and caring, through focused shots of the character in distress, showing vulnerability. Furthermore, I will construct representations of different social groups, as the focus of this episode is economic differences between social classes. This can be linked to David Guantlett’s theory of identity, through varied representation of social class and gender, audiences can create their own identities. All actors are white, not representing multiple ethnic groups. However, the bear, which will be a running feature throughout all episodes is a raceless, genderless, ageless character that anyone can personally relate to.
I will target my intended audience through content and issues, for example drug abuse and homelessness. Millennials will feel a personal connection to these issues, as they have become most relevant in the last few decades. This programme is not targeted to a specific gender. The socioeconomic groups of C1, C2 and D should connect with the content shown. Additionally, this programme has a similar target audience to ITV, and similar ‘hot topic’ issues are covered. However, Dreamscape differs slightly from content on ITV channels due to its genre, as it’s more alternative and ‘gothic’ than programmes currently aired. The target audience for the magazine, Update, will target the same social class and genders, however, will be slightly more sophisticated to target mature young adults.
